The ongoing legal proceedings around the NEET UG 2025 examination in Indore have taken another step forward, with the next hearing now scheduled for May 29, 2025. The controversy centers around alleged exam-day disruptions at multiple centres in Indore and Ujjain, affecting thousands of medical aspirants.

What Happened in the Latest Hearing?

On Monday, the Madhya Pradesh High Court held another hearing on the NEET UG 2025 result case. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared virtually on behalf of the National Testing Agency (NTA). During the session, he presented a statistical analysis that attempted to show comparable average question attempts between students from Indore and nearby exam centres.

However, Advocate Mridul Bhatnagar, representing the petitioners, strongly countered this claim. He argued that top-performing students in Indore, who come from coaching hubs with better facilities, cannot be compared with students from rural or less-equipped areas, and thus the statistical comparison lacks fairness and merit.

The Controversy: Disruptions During NEET UG 2025 Exam

Initially, the NTA had acknowledged power disruptions at 24 centres in Indore. This was later clarified to include 18 centres in Indore and 6 centres in Ujjain. Over 2,000 candidates out of 27,000 students who appeared for the exam in Indore were said to be affected.

Key Allegations:

  • Power outages lasting from 10 minutes to over an hour

  • Poor lighting conditions; in some cases, candles were used

  • No extra time was given to affected candidates

  • Alleged violation of equal opportunity and fair examination conditions

Petitioners are demanding a re-examination for all affected candidates, citing mental distress and disruption during the crucial national-level entrance exam.

NTA’s Defense

The NTA has consistently maintained that the exam was conducted peacefully and that any minor disruptions did not significantly affect performance. The statistical report shared during the latest hearing was meant to support this position, though it has been challenged by the petitioners.

What Happens Next?

The next hearing in this matter is scheduled for May 29, 2025. Until then, the court is expected to review all submitted evidence and arguments, including the possibility of forming a redressal panel or even ordering a partial re-exam if the disruptions are found to have severely impacted candidates.

Why This Matters to NEET UG Aspirants

With over 2 million students appearing for NEET UG across India, even localized exam-day disruptions can lead to serious questions about fairness, transparency, and merit-based selection. The outcome of this case may also set a precedent for how similar incidents are handled in future NEET UG or PG exams.

Stay Updated

Candidates are advised to regularly monitor official notifications from the NTA and the High Court for updates on result declarations and case outcomes.
