Medical Colleges in India: Overview

India currently offers a total of 108,915 MBBS seats across 706 medical colleges. According to recent data, Karnataka leads the nation with the highest number of MBBS seats, followed closely by Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat.

In Tamil Nadu, there are 74 medical colleges with a collective capacity of 11,600 MBBS seats. Karnataka boasts 70 medical colleges, offering a total of 11,745 MBBS seats. Maharashtra, ranking third, hosts 68 medical colleges providing 10,845 MBBS seats.

Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat both have 68 medical colleges each, offering 9,903 and 7,150 MBBS seats respectively. Additionally, Chandigarh, Mizoram, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands each have one medical college, with 100 MBBS seats available in their respective Government Medical Colleges (GMCs).

Furthermore, Sikkim, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh each have one medical college, providing 50 MBBS seats in their respective institutions.

Medical Colleges in India and Seats

After receiving the results, students are invited to a counselling session where they are informed about available colleges throughout India. The counselling process is based on the NEET ranking. The students who score the highest marks in their NEET exams will get the first priority and can select the best MBBS colleges in India and get MBBS admission in India. NEET UG Counselling is done by MCC for 15% Seats and Respective State wise for 85%.

  • Age: Aspirants should have attained the minimum age of 17 years for getting admission to MBBS in India. The upper age limit for MBBS admission is 25 years.
  • Nationality:Candidates must be Indian citizens or Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), or Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), as specified by the institution and NMC guidelines.
